School Eco Committee projects in school involving Eco representatives
from each class, and the school community as a whole.
The Sciennes Eco Committee has been very busy this year.
Overall very good progress with the targets set out in our Action Plan.
Here is what we have done so far!
Waste Minimisation:
Bins throughout the school have been replaced with much smaller bins and better recycling facilities. Children have been asked to recycle more and take their lunch waste home. This has made a huge difference to the amount of waste that needs to be uplifted from the school. It has been reduced from four large bins being uplifted three times a week to two bins being uplifted twice a week.
There is an ongoing focus on reducing the amount of paper used in school.

The whole school participated in Fairtrade Fortnight. Children were taught about cotton farming, unfair wages/working conditions and what they can do about it through lessons, homework, listening to a speaker, stall, assemblies, taste tests, competitions, tuck shop, artwork, school displays and videos. Money was raised for Hillview Primary in South Africa through raffling of Fairtrade Hampers. A Fairtrade tuckshop was held.

The school garden has been tidied and harvested. The vegetables were used to make soup by Primary 3 during their Food & Farming project. A planting schedule has been made to include more vegetables and a herb planter. Primary 2 has been given specific responsibility for the planting and maintenance of the eco garden so that in P3 they will be able to harvest the food they have tended. A member of the support staff has been given responsibility for the overview of this area.

Sebastian Hemmann and his team of three assistants (Sjoerd, Theodora and Dagmar) led a day of activities for the children, designed to raise awareness of climate change, which culminated in the planting of cherry, rowan and birch saplings in our Wildlife Garden, opposite the playground.
Each participant was issued with a t-shirt, book and certificate. The project began five years ago and was initiated by a child called Felix. It has since grown into a global movement, supported by major world figures and organisations, with the aim of planting a billion trees in each country that gets involved. Children are empowered as ambassadors for change and tasked with spreading the message on how to combat climate change by taking practical steps. The initiative is supported by City of Edinburgh Council and has been endorsed by the Lord Provost. The first event in Edinburgh was held at Davidson's Mains Primary in March 2012, the second at Duddingston Primaryand the third at Sciennes Primary. The intention is that schools who send 3-5 pupil participants will in turn offer to host their own event so that the initiative expands throughout the city.
The saplings we used were generously provided for free by the Woodland Trust as part of their initiative to plant 6 million trees for the Queen's Jubilee. Trees can be planted between November and April.

Without even stepping off once, Brianna successfully unicycled 2500m
across the Forth Road Bridge on Sunday 16th June to raise funds for and
awareness of the Plant for the Planet global initiative, begun six years ago by now 13 year old Felix.
In March 2013 Sciennes hosted the third Academy of Climate Ambassadors to take place in Edinburgh, led by Sebastian Hemmann and his team of volunteers, with pupils from Sciennes, Tollcross, James Gillespie's and Bruntsfield Primaries. Our Eco teachers Miss Mackintosh, Ms Gregson and Mr Kearton, along with Sciennes' pupil Eco representatives from P5-P7 as well as P5B pupils followed up on the Academy by determining to raise funds to plant more trees. Support Brianna's fundraising efforts at betterplace.org. Total funds of £244.88 raised on Friday 14th June from the whole school 'Crazy Hair, Crazy Hat Day' will be donated to Plant for the Planet.
The initiative has many patrons including Edinburgh's Lord Provost, Donald Wilson:
"I recently became Edinburgh's patron for the children's Plant-for-the-Planet initiative. The worldwide movement is based on a vision that children can plant a million trees in each and every country, helping to compensate for CO2 emissions. In Germany, where it originated back in 2007, more than two million trees have already been planted. I attended a 'Plant-for-the-Planet' Academy at Duddingston Primary School on 2 October, joining pupils as they learned about the climate crisis, global citizenship and global justice. I then made good my commitment to 'stop talking, start planting', helping the children towards their ambitious one million tree target. It was great so see such enthusiasm for the cause. I sincerely hope the children keep up the good work and spread the word amongst their family and friends - which is exactly what I'll be doing."

Crazy Hat, Crazy Hair Day Friday 14th June
Primary 5B and Ms Gregson are organising a 'Crazy Hat, Crazy Hair Day on Friday 14th June to raise funds for Plant for the Planet. Donations of between 20p and £1.00 on the day. P5B gave a
fantastic presentation at the P4-7 Assembly on Friday explaining the
event and the P4P worldwide initiative to combat climate change by
planting trees. See this earlier post for more information. Well done to all and particularly Zoe, Adele and Cerys.
On June 16th 2013 at 10:30 a.m., P5 Climate Justice Ambassador Brianna,
will unicycle the Forth Road Bridge across the Firth of Forth to raise funds for Plant for the Planet. The
suspension bridge has a length of 2,500 metres. You can support Brianna in her challenge at betterplace.org

Sciennes Eco Garden
The Edinburgh Green Trust are working with some of our P4s in our Eco garden planting strawberries, red currants and rhubarb.
On Friday 14th June many of our pupils and staff sported some crazy
hairdos and hats all in aid of Ms Gregson, the Eco Group and P5B's Plant for the Planet
fundraiser. Plant for the Planet is a worldwide initiative with the
intention of planting one million trees in every country. Ms Pearmain,
Mrs Barker and Mrs Nowell sportingly auctioned off the chance to be
'made over' by the pupils (using Sciennes' credits from the P6
innovative 'Class Economy' Financial Education project they have been
running this year). Mr Howie led the P4-7 Assembly donning a fetching
veil! Representatives from P5B gave a presentation at Assembly and it
was a cheery and colourful playground at breaktime! More photographs on
the Class Pages. Good luck to Brianna in her unicycle challenge on Sunday 16th June.
